The Hertfordshire & Essex High School

AWA were appointed as part of the consultant team to produce the full building services design for this major refurbishment project converting an existing gymnasium into a new sixth form college block.

The Sixth Form Centre will provide fantastic learning and social space with up to the minute technology to facilitate learning in the 21st century.

The works included the installation of a new mezzanine floor to form a new study space for the students on the ground and first floor whilst providing a new servery for the kitchen staff.

As part of the refurbishment project, the conversion of existing changing rooms into a new toilet facility which adjoins the new study space.

A key driver for the client was the commissioning and operation of Mechanical & Electrical services to allow for occupation, all had to be working at 100% for students to occupy the centre.

Throughout the scheme AWA worked with the Contractor and Client to ensure the project ran smoothly through the construction process, giving design information to the M&E Sub-contractor when required.

The development posed a number of challenges including strip out of the existing services and linking the new heating services to the existing network.
